Educational Multimedia Research Centre, Roorkee(formerly known as Audio Visual Research Centre, Roorkee) was established in the year 1983, in the world famous University of Roorkee (now Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee) by University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi based on the recommendations of the Task Force on Mass Communication and Educational Technology. Later on 14th January 2005, it was taken over by CEC, New Delhi from IIT Roorkee under the purview of tripartite MOU signed amongst UGC New Delhi, CEC New Delhi & IIT Roorkee on 4th January 2005.

The main objective of the centre is to produce high-quality educational TV programmes, develop e-learning applications such as e-content, LORs, multicast live interactive lectures using EDUSAT and conduct media research. The centre has till date produced programmes on subjects like Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Life Sciences, Engineering, Arts, Life Sciences, Nutrition, Medical Sciences, Tourism, Forestry, Fine Arts, Career Counselling, Yoga, Social Sciences, Architecture, Environment, Technology, Health, History, Culture, Geology, Animal Sciences, Water Resources, Hydrology, Earth Sciences and so on. The programs produced by the Centre have been broadcasting on Vyas Channel (the 24-hr higher education channel of UGC-CEC), GyanDarshan and DD-1.

Now the centre is also developing e-courseware on Chemistry subject based on UGC model Curriculum under the phase-1 of NME-ICT project of MHRD, Government of India. For phase-2 of the same project, centre has been allotted ‘Bachelor in Applied Physical Sciences: Industrial Chemistry’ and ‘Bachelor in Applied Sciences (Hons): Instrumentation’.

EMRC Roorkee is well equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities such as TV Studio, Virtual Studio, Professional Lighting and Sound system, Broadcast Quality HD cameras for indoor and outdoor shooting, Non Linear Editing Systems, Graphics Work Station etc.

Some of the best academicians and some of the most outstanding researches - a knowledgemine of information – is the best way to define a world famous institute like IIT, EMRC Roorkee is located right in the heart of such a knowledgemine. Also, several other National level Institutes, particularly, Central Building and Research Institute (CBRI), National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) and Irrigation Research Institute (IRI) are situated closeby. Some other institutes of National repute like Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, National Institute for visually Handicapped, Media Council of forestry Research & Education, Dehradun are also present within an approachable radii.

And what more, if a program requires scenic beauty one doesn’t have to go too far. On moving just a few kilometres ahead, the beauty of the magnanimous Himalayan mountain range, with the river Ganges flowing through it, can be captured. The Himalayan range has its own unique flora and fauna, art and culture which themselves are an endless resource for visually rich as well as informative educational TV programs.

Uttarakhand also has religious and spiritual importance and is famous for Haridwar – the gateway to the Gods or Rishikesh – the yoga capital of the world, which are at a stone’s throw away from Roorkee. Some of the world famous Yoga and Spiritual Centres present in the State offer ample opportunities to highlight the spiritual and yogic heritage. The State also boosts of some beautiful cities and hill stations of archaeological and historical importance like Mussorie, Dehradun, Rishikesh etc, just to name a few. All these advantages, clubbed together, give the centre an upper edge in fulfilling the objectives of CWCR.
